The Garfield County Commission approved three separate actions during its public meeting in Escalante: a $15,000 county contribution to start an eight‑man high school football program in Escalante, the issuance of three business licenses for contractors working in the county and a motion to enter executive session to discuss litigation.
The motion to provide $15,000 to support the Escalante High School football program passed after students and supporters described a $60,000 estimated startup cost and said the school and district had already raised $25,000. Jackson Caulding, who spoke on behalf of students and organizers, said the program would “benefit our community significantly” by providing discipline, physical fitness and opportunities for youth. A commissioner moved the grant and a second was recorded; the commission then voted aloud, “All in favor, aye.”
Commissioners also voted to approve three business licenses for contractors who will work in the county. County staff said they had verified contractors’ state licenses as part of the review. The motion to grant the licenses was moved and seconded and approved by voice vote.
Later in the meeting, the commission voted to enter an executive session to discuss litigation, with county counsel and planning director Caden asked to remain to advise the board.
