The Middletown Board of Education on June 5 recognized a newly revitalized City of Middletown Recreation Boxing Club, heard updates from the My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) fellows program and received reports about notable athletic achievements and upcoming regional sporting events hosted by the district.
Boxing club recognition: City of Middletown and district leaders introduced the recreation department’s boxing program and acknowledged recent facility updates and a ribbon cutting held May 8. Raylyn Berthoff and Nicole Sarakis (assistant to the superintendent overseeing the boxing program) spoke to the board, thanked coaches — including Coach Randy, Coach Mitch, Coach Danny, Coach Jose, Coach Jonathan and Coach Mark — and listed boxers who attended the meeting (for example, Carlos Castaneda, Julian Faust, Miles Galloway, Caleb Morgan and Tyrese Smith among others). District officials said they hope to expand intramural opportunities for middle and high school students to access the club after school.
My Brother’s Keeper updates: Everton Brown and MBK leaders reported that MBK fellows recently visited Niagara Falls and had campus visits to the University at Buffalo and Niagara University. The program inducted two new fellows for 2025–26 (Kendall Surprise and Kyle Williams) and launched its first annual scholarship this year, awarding two scholarships to seniors. Board members praised MBK’s community trips and college visits, which the presenters described as first‑time experiences for several scholars.
Athletics and hosted events: Board members highlighted a strong year for girls’ athletics, noting three sectional titles and individual state qualifiers in wrestling, tennis and track and field. The district will host state semifinal lacrosse games and a large regional track and field championship event, expected to draw thousands of athletes and spectators to district facilities. Board members also noted that the softball team lost a playoff game to Corning Painted Post, the 2024 state champion, and reported a narrow loss in flag football (19–18) in a state quarterfinal appearance.
Community partnerships and recognition: Board members thanked district staff, community volunteers and the recreation department for program support, including donated equipment for the boxing program. Presenters and board members encouraged community participation and noted continued district support for extracurricular and community programs.
