Students and staff highlight Unified PE program; district told it will expand next year

Members of the Owatonna Public School District board on May 27 heard a “mission moment” presentation from students and staff involved in the district’s Unified Physical Education program.
Superintendent Tim Elstad introduced students Leah Lechner (9th grade), Mac Dickerson (8th grade) and Sophie Burrow (7th grade) and teacher Amanda Flores. Elstad said the program “brings general and special education students together for sports and group activities” and praised the staff for creating inclusive opportunities.
The presenters told the board they had attended Special Olympics Unified Day at the State Capitol on March 21, where students heard speakers including Unified student speakers and state education officials and had the chance to meet with senators. The board was told the class launched in 2023 and that district staff plan to expand Unified PE next year so more students can participate.
Students described activities they have enjoyed, including a kickball tournament, fishing and other group events. The board repeatedly thanked the teachers and staff, and members said they would like to see more opportunities that bring students of all ability levels together.
Why it matters: Unified PE is an inclusion initiative that the board said supports social connection and athletic participation for students with diverse needs. Board members asked staff to continue building opportunities and to bring updates to the board as the program grows.
