Members and several witnesses — including the district athletics representative and student and coach speakers according to the meeting record — described existing local practice in which coaches make safety‑based decisions and consult the athletic director and the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) in certain circumstances. Committee members asked that the policy explicitly reflect that practice and add a review mechanism so a coach is not left subject to unreviewed public pressure.
Committee members discussed examples that could justify a coach‑level decision, including hazardous field conditions, crowd safety concerns and other extenuating circumstances. Some members pressed for a narrowly worded policy that lists examples and provides review steps; others warned against overly specific lists that could become outdated and urged a standards‑based clause referring to safety and supervisor review.
The committee approved the policy reading and will remand the policy back to the subcommittee for revision to add language clarifying when a coach may make team‑level participation decisions, what protections and review will attach to those decisions, and how student‑level nonparticipation differs from team‑level cancellations or forfeitures.
No final vote on the interscholastic athletics policy was recorded at the meeting; committee members asked staff and the athletics director to draft proposed language and return the policy for a future reading and vote.
