The San Antonio Planning Commission voted June 11 to approve the committee-recommended nominations to the city’s Technical Advisory Committee (TAC), after a resident urged the commission to reconsider a nomination to preserve District 5 representation.
Bianca Maldonado, a community member who identified herself as representing Pitac community interests, told the commission she opposed the slate as recommended because a candidate listed for a District 5 seat appeared to reside in District 8. “We’re losing a member of PITAC who represents District 5 and is not being reappointed,” Maldonado said. She asked the commission to reopen the nomination process so applicants from District 5 could be considered.
The commission’s nominations item proceeded after staff described the committee’s recommendation package. Valerie Rodríguez of the planning administration team presented the nominations packet and said the nominations came from the committee’s review of applicants.
Commissioner Orion moved to accept the committee recommendations; Commissioner Sánchez seconded the motion. The motion passed with seven votes in favor and one vote opposed. The commission congratulated the nominees and said they would begin service in upcoming TAC cycles.
The discussion included a brief staff explanation that the package presented the committee’s picks for primary and alternate seats and that the committee had reviewed the applications during its meeting. Commissioners asked staff clarifying questions about district distribution among applicants and whether the applicants understood the expected meeting frequency; staff said TAC members would meet in the following cycle and that meeting times could be two-hour sessions.
The appointment item was procedural; commissioners did not attach conditions to the nominees. The commission moved on to other agenda business after the vote.
Looking ahead, staff told commissioners they expected to convene a legislative briefing in July to review pending state-level changes that could affect local planning practice.
