District principals describe early results from EL coaching contract; board to review contract separately

Principals and central office staff described how instructional‑coaching work under an EL partnership has been used as a central framework for school improvement, and the board agreed to consider the contract separately rather than on the consent agenda.

Central office staff said the EL coaches work with school leadership teams on a cycle of observation, feedback and professional development tied to goals such as student engagement, grading practice updates and rollout of student crew. Principals reported using structures introduced by EL—learning walks, PLC coaching and a planned student crew launch—to align practice across schools.

At least four principals said the EL coaches had conducted PLC sessions, supported new teachers with classroom practices and engaged in regular walkthroughs that produce data principals can use to measure improvement. High school leaders said EL supports faculty crew work and the implementation of fifth‑period student crew pilots. Elementary leaders said coaching helped form professional learning that reduced opportunities for students to “opt out” of lessons and increased engagement.

Board members asked whether EL support supplants or replaces other district professional development funding. The superintendent and chief academic staff said the EL contract represents an explicit way to invest PD funds and a framework to coordinate instructional coaching across schools; principals said the coaching complements other PD and is used to scale and sustain practices.
