Historic district approves small sign for hostel employee housing

The New Shoreham Historic District Commission approved a proposed name sign for a hostel on Lot 6 (block referenced in the application) during its meeting, approving a four-foot-long sign with six-inch-high letters.

Commissioners said the sign met size requirements and that every building should have a name. The applicant, Tom Martucci, said he simply wanted to give the employee housing a name and install a small sign. Commission staff noted the application omitted building frontage measurements, a detail the commission said was not dispositive for this item but should be included on future applications.

Commissioners moved and seconded approval; the board voted in favor with members saying “aye.” No member spoke in opposition on the record. The commission recorded that the sign dimensions comply with the regulation limits the commission enforces for text size and total sign area.

Commissioners asked staff to remind applicants that sign applications should include all building signs and square footage details so the file reflects existing signage on a building. Amanda (staff member) said she had retyped portions of the application where handwriting was illegible and that the missing frontage number was on her desk.

The motion approved the sign as presented and closed that agenda item; commissioners moved on to subsequent sign and building-related applications.
