Washington County supervisors approve series of grants, trainings and tax exemptions

Separately the board approved two tax-abatement applications: one for renovation work on the former Trustmark building in downtown Greenville, which involved improvements totaling $70,354 and a seven-year abatement period on the improvements, and a larger exemption request from Mars Foods on equipment and related investment totaling $4,502,193 for a 10-year abatement. County staff and the board discussed that county taxes on the improvements would be exempt for the abatement period and that any sale of a property during the abatement would void the exemption.
The supervisors also ratified the county's participation as a pass-through applicant for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to fund water and sewer upgrades for the city of Greenville; the city will provide the required match. The board accepted the lowest of two quotes for a multimedia system in Hollanda's community center ($12,995) and approved other routine agenda items.
