He said DECA students typically rely mostly on fundraising and that the $500 would be a token contribution if approved.
Committee member Sylvia argued for larger support, saying the committee should show stronger financial backing for programs like DECA and suggested $1,000 or more. She noted that 13 students from the state qualified for first-, second- and third-place awards relative to hundreds of competitors and called for public recognition.
Other members emphasized that many extracurricular trips are funded through student fundraising and that the district had previously added a budget line for such trips but that it was currently exhausted. Several members volunteered that they would contribute personally to help bridge the gap.
A motion to approve the $500 donation passed by voice vote. The committee also agreed to recognize DECA students and other high-achieving students (including plans to recognize a state champion in a future meeting) at an upcoming meeting.
