Dr. Salito, the superintendent, explained the West Greenwich resolution27s aim: shifting state funding from private-school transportation to homeless-student transportation, fully funding McKinney-Vento requirements and reassessing transportation policy statewide. He said committee member Terry had testified at the State House about the increasing number of unhoused students placed in Burrillville and the resulting cost burden on the district.
Dr. Salito told the committee that applying the funding change to Burrillville would translate to roughly $151,000 in transportation funds for the district, a figure discussed as an example of how the proposed reallocation would help districts bearing the cost of transporting unhoused students.
Committee members voiced support for replicating the West Greenwich resolution to add Burrillville27s voice to statewide advocacy. David moved to approve the mirror resolution; Jill seconded the motion. The committee approved the motion by voice vote.
The committee directed staff to adapt the resolution language to Burrillville's circumstances and to distribute the resolution to elected officials, town councils and other school committees across the state.
