City staff secured a lower‑cost barge provider and $45,000 in sponsor commitments from local waterfront businesses, reducing the city's cost for the Fourth of July fireworks display; council approved moving forward and directed staff to pursue multiyear options.
City staff told the council they located a lower‑cost barge provider and secured private sponsorships that together reduce the city’s out‑of‑pocket cost for the 2025 Fourth of July fireworks display.
Fire Chief Deputy Brian Regan and Waterfront and Economic Development Director Greg Kapovich reported that Curtin Maritime offered a compliant barge for $55,000 — down from an earlier mid‑year estimate that exceeded $125,000 for a barge alone. Greg Kapovich said city outreach to harbor businesses and hotels secured $45,000 in sponsor commitments from local firms including Shade Hotel, Sonesta and others. With the reduced barge fee and sponsorships, the estimated city share for the event fell to roughly $83,000 (the overall event cost includes the fireworks shell package and other vendor fees).
Staff said they had explored landside options and alternate venues but found none feasible this year; the school district could not accommodate a show. Staff recommended proceeding and said they would prepare vendor contracts and return with a budget resolution to appropriate the funds.
Council members praised staff work and asked staff to explore multiyear contracts with barge providers, opportunities for crowdfunding or community fundraising, and potential partnerships with neighboring beach cities. The council unanimously approved authorizing staff to execute contracts and directed staff to seek multiyear options and additional sponsorship/fundraising channels where feasible.
Staff will return with the necessary budget amendment and contract documents and pursue longer‑term strategies (multi‑year barge options, sponsorship commitments and potential donated funding channels) to stabilize costs in future years.
