Community members urged Lancaster City Council not to develop a homeless campground at the Rancho Sierra Golf Course in unincorporated East Lancaster, and city officials told the meeting they will look for alternate uses.
Lisa Stoner, a resident who lives near the golf course site, said a recent community meeting drew 175 people who signed a petition opposing development of a campground there. “I’m pleading with you, please do not do this and develop this campground in our rural area of East Lancaster,” Stoner said during public comment.
Council members responded during the meeting that the city would not pursue a homeless campground at the golf course. A council speaker summarized the city’s position: the city remains committed to completing its purchase of the property but said it is “looking for other things other than a homeless center at this time.” The council member added that the site had originally been selected because it was thought to affect the fewest residents, but officials said that conclusion had been re-evaluated after public input.
Speakers urged county Supervisor Catherine Barger to intervene; Stoner said many of those who signed the petition live outside city limits but are part of the local economy and school system and would be affected by the project.
City staff indicated they are continuing to evaluate alternatives for housing or services but gave no timeline or specific alternate proposals during this meeting.
