Board adopts TeachTown curriculum for specialized classrooms serving students with disabilities

The Yuma Elementary School District 1 governing board voted to adopt TeachTown as the alternative curriculum for students in specialized Exceptional Student Services (ESS) classrooms who cannot access the general-education curriculum.
At the meeting, a staff presenter explained that the ESS curriculum-adoption team reviewed materials and recommended TeachTown because it meets both academic and developmental needs for students with diverse abilities. "The TeachTown materials are flexible, developmentally appropriate, and tailored to diverse abilities while promoting engagement and preparing students for life beyond school," the presenter said.
District staff said the curriculum is intended for students in specialized programs who require alternative instructional materials and that the adoption would begin in the 2025–26 school year. The recommendation followed an opportunity for board members to review the curriculum materials during a 60-day review period; staff noted the board was given additional access time to examine the materials prior to the vote.
The board approved the administrative recommendation by motion.
