At the March 11 meeting the board approved a motion to adopt the personnel recommendations covering actions dated Feb. 7 through February (motion made and seconded on the record). The approval was made by voice vote after a roll-call request; the transcript records the motion and a verbal "Aye."
Mister Garvin (staff member) summarized district staffing and operational updates. He reported continued difficulty filling some positions such as JROTC staff because the Department of Defense/Reserve processing has been slow. Garvin said paperwork for the transfer of Mr. Thornberry to a lead JROTC role was submitted in early January but remains delayed because the Defense Department contacts are in transition.
Garvin also reported hiring successes: a new language-arts hire (position filled), a new math teacher recruited at a University of Indianapolis job fair who also will coach sports, a new full-time bus driver and a new substitute bus monitor scheduled to start after spring break. He said, however, that transportation and bus-monitor recruitment remain an ongoing challenge and the district is collecting market data from local employers to remain competitive.
On operations and food service, Garvin described a grab-and-go breakfast pilot at Central (modeled on the middle school) intended to boost participation and reduce classroom tracking burdens for teachers; he said the district has invested funds to expand the model. Garvin and Dr. Hammock also noted aging food-service refrigeration equipment that will require replacement and that Chartwells Director Clara Lopez is assisting with pricing and procurement options.
On custodial services, Garvin said the district received proposals from 10 companies for the next custodial contract; the review committee will score proposals and interview the top three candidates after spring break.
Board members discussed a separate procedural item to void stale-dated checks; trustees decided to defer final action until the next meeting while staff confirms the proper accounting and unclaimed property steps for a small number of wire and check items.
No contested votes were recorded in these operational items; the personnel recommendations motion passed on a voice vote and the custodial contract review process will continue to a future meeting.
