Lynchburg City Council voted 6‑1 to rezone roughly one acre at 1616 McVeigh Road from R‑1 (single‑family) to R‑2 to allow the property owner to subdivide an oversized parcel into smaller lots and build an additional single‑family home.
City staff and the petitioner’s consultant, Amy Sipe of AccuPoint Surveying and Design, told council the request originally sought R‑3 zoning (which would allow duplexes) and was denied by the planning commission in January on grounds that it conflicted with the city’s future land use guidance. The petitioner amended the application to R‑2 to permit additional single‑family development compatible with the land‑use plan.
Sipe said the proposed new lot would be served by city water and sewer and that the owner planned home designs similar to existing neighborhood houses. No speakers opposed the petition during the public hearing. Councilmember discussion was brief; the motion to approve passed 6‑1.
Why it matters
The rezoning allows a small infill subdivision and one additional dwelling in a neighborhood currently zoned R‑1; council’s vote followed a planning commission review and public hearing.
What to watch next
If the petitioner proceeds, subdivision and building permit reviews will follow and the property will be connected to city water and sewer as described by the applicant.
