Morgan City Council on March 11 voted unanimously to accept corrected quitclaim deeds from the Morgan County School District that align property for a potential sewer lift station on the south side of Young Street, east of Morgan Elementary School.
Ty (city staff) told the council the city had attempted the transfer previously and “we did it wrong,” explaining a small triangular parcel originally conveyed in the transaction had been mis-surveyed. Ty said the corrected exhibit and new quitclaim resolve the overlap between the Wardell property and the school district so the school district now conveys the parcel directly to the city. "We took it to the school district to have them sign it, and they're like, wait a minute… the school district said, what happened to the rest of our frontage," Ty said, describing how the error was discovered during final signature review.
The council discussed that there is no immediate plan to build a lift station; the site was plumbed during prior road work so a lift station could be installed later if development or other triggers require sewer service. Ty said the timing of construction will depend on whichever property owner—Wardell, Jenkins, or the school—triggers the need, and that any required payback agreements would be handled with the benefiting property owners.
Dave (councilmember) moved to approve Resolution 25-04, "Resolution accepting quit claim deeds to Morgan City from the Board of Education, Morgan County School District, for the installation of a sewer lift station to be installed on property along the South side of Young Street east of Morgan Elementary School." Eric (councilmember) seconded. The roll call produced recorded “Aye” votes and the mayor declared the motion unanimous.
The adopted resolution repeals the earlier 2024 resolution and records the corrected exhibit and deed in the city packet. The city clerk will record the corrected quitclaim and the city will hold the property until such time as a developer or other trigger requires lift-station construction.
