The Budget, Finance & Economic Development committee reviewed the FY26 budget calendar, document distribution and the formal process for member questions, department responses and proposed amendments.
Committee staff said the mayor will present the budget on March 25; members will receive program and detail documents and are expected to review materials before deliberations, which are scheduled to begin March 31. Departments will meet with the committee daily during March 31–April 17. Committee staff outlined deadlines for member questions to departments (members must submit questions in Microsoft Word by specified dates so staff can compile them), and explained that departments will be asked to respond on the chamber floor and to file written responses the same day.
Residency‑area meetings to gather community input were scheduled for April evenings; decisions week and voting were set for April 21–25; first reading of the FY26 budget is scheduled for May 16 and second reading for June 3. Committee staff explained amendment submission rules: residency‑area conditions for certain line items must be submitted by April 14, and all other proposed amendments were due by 09:00 on April 17 (with additional rules for cuts over $10,000 and revolving fund/ grant conditions).
Members discussed document delivery and the confidential appendices. Staff confirmed the mayor’s office will provide paper copies (one program and one detail set) for each council member and for each district office, plus two extra vendor‑printed sets per member’s office (four sets total per member listed in the packet distribution). Members asked for at least one PDF copy for each council member; staff agreed to check availability of digital detail documents and to provide a PDF of the program book. Committee staff also described the process for members to request confidential details; staff will coordinate with the budget office to distribute redacted or controlled copies under the standard sign‑out protocol.
Chair Lee summarized: “We took what we did last year and we put it in in words for you,” and asked members to use the calendar and deadlines to prepare questions and proposed amendments. The committee closed public testimony on the item and deferred further committee deliberation pending the mayor’s formal budget submission.
Ending: Committee staff said they will circulate question templates, accept member questions per the stated deadlines, and supply copies and updates via Granicus and Legistar as department responses are received.
