Board approves school grant and nutrition fund amendments totaling $1.106 million

The Prince George County Board of Supervisors on March 11 approved two school budget amendments totaling $1,106,227 to incorporate new and increased grant awards and to adjust the school nutrition fund.
Ms. Drury presented the first amendment, noting the school division received an increase in Title I funding of $278,470, a new state safety grant of $247,750, and a state literacy grant of $60,000. The total of those additions is $580,227. Staff said Title I dollars will be used for travel, training, instructional salaries and health insurance; the state safety grant would fund safety guard salaries and related expenses; and the literacy grant would fund professional services.
The second amendment concerns the school nutrition fund and requests a net appropriation increase of $526,000. Schools reported lower-than-budgeted collections from students and staff, higher federal school nutrition revenues and the planned use of school nutrition fund balance to cover wages, benefits and food supplies. Staff noted state limits on how much cash reserves the school nutrition fund may carry; the amendment uses fund balance and federal revenue adjustments to achieve the change.
The motion to approve the $580,227 school grant amendment was made by Mr. Cox and seconded by Mr. Pugh and was approved unanimously by roll call. The motion to approve the $526,000 school nutrition amendment was moved by Mr. Cox and seconded by Mr. Webb and likewise passed unanimously.
Dr. Lyle and Mr. Barnes from the school division were present at the meeting for questions but no substantive modifications to the amendments were requested during the board’s review.
The approved amendments were appropriated to FY 2025 so the schools could expend the funds in accordance with grant conditions and nutritional program requirements.
