Cameron County Commissioners Court adopted a proclamation declaring March 2025 as National Social Work Month in Cameron County. The proclamation, introduced and read by the court, cites social workersrole in supporting human well-being, advocacy and community services and recognizes the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) School of Social Work as the regional school offering accredited bachelorand masterlevel social-work programs south of San Antonio.
Luis Torres Ostos, founding dean of the UTRGV School of Social Work, addressed the court and highlighted the theme "compassion plus action," described student placements across county agencies and announced a UTRGV social-work conference in Brownsville the following day focused on topics including human trafficking and dating violence. Faculty and students also spoke briefly; two students introduced themselves and described their studies and field internships.
The court presented the proclamation to the dean, faculty and students and took group photos. Commissioners praised the profession's community impact and encouraged students to continue serving locally.
