Commissioners approve 130 Oscar Williams Road renovation plans; design estimate about $4.9 million

County staff and design consultants presented updated drawings and a cost estimate for renovation of the county-owned office/warehouse at 130 Oscar Williams Road. The project, as presented by John Piercy of Megamorphosis and county staff, would renovate roughly 20,000 square feet of the larger 80,000+-square-foot building, add new controlled public entrances for JP courts and constables, create a larger JP courtroom, training room and a new chiller enclosure, and improve parking and wayfinding.
Piercy said the schematic designs aim to reuse existing metal building structure where economical and to maintain a secure private entrance and secure arraignment corridor for JP courts. The consultantscost estimate identified a contract amount in the drawings of about $4.9 million for the construction scope described, plus additional soft-costs and county-performed work such as resurfacing and furniture. County staff noted the estimate was roughly half the cost of retrofitting the original downtown building while also providing more usable square footage.
Commissioner Gossel (mover) and Commissioner Benavides (seconder) moved to approve the drawings and proceed. The court approved the motion by voice vote.
Staff will next seek pricing via job-order contractor selection and return with final contract documents and guaranteed maximum prices as required.
