Commissioners approve new county paving crew to accelerate road maintenance

Cameron County Commissioners Court voted to create an additional road paving crew in the public works department to speed up the countyfive-year road maintenance plan and reduce the time between resurfacing cycles.
Public works staff presented data showing the county maintains roughly 516 paved roadway miles across four precincts. With current crews, staff said it could take more than 30 years to cycle through needed paving in Precincts 3 and 4 at present production rates. Commissioners and staff agreed that adding a dedicated paving crew, with targeted equipment, would allow the county to mill-and-overlay substantially more miles per year and reduce the cycle to under 15 years countywide.
Staff estimated year-1 costs (personnel, materials, fuel and rentals) and one-time equipment purchases. The court approved using available fiscal-year road funds (staff identified approximately $2.0 million of unallocated road repair money) and authorized initial equipment rental while purchased machines are delivered. Commissioners discussed equipment lead times (8— months for some graders and trucks) and a plan to rent equipment to start work quickly.
Commissioner Godesen moved to approve the new paving crew plan as presented; Commissioner Benavides seconded and the motion carried on a voice vote. Staff said the new crew could be deployed to expedite the ongoing Grimes Road project and begin additional work in precincts that are lagging on the maintenance schedule. Commissioners noted in-house paving is materially less expensive than contracting out similar work.
