Senate committee approves bill renaming stretches of U.S. highways and a Clay County bridge for veterans and POW/MIA observance

Senator Bowers, the senator from Cloud, explained the bill designates three memorial namings: a portion of U.S. 160 in Seward County as the Corporal Monty Wayne Forest Memorial Highway; a section of U.S. 77 from I-70 north to U.S. 24 in Riley County as the POW/MIA Memorial Highway; and bridge number 82-14-60206 on K-82 in Clay County as a POW/MIA Memorial Bridge. The measure requires the Secretary of Transportation to place appropriate signs when sufficient donations have been received to cover initial costs and provide for future maintenance or replacement.
Bowers said proponents at committee included a House member and representatives from VFW Post 774 and retired veterans; there were no opponents or neutrals reported at committee. The committee amended the bill to change the effective date reference from the statute book publication to the Kansas Register. The committee adopted the report and moved the bill forward by unanimous voice vote.
