Commission eyes Lake Olympia parcel for a small park; will seek owner cooperation

The Grass Valley Historical Commission spent significant time on March 11 discussing a 3‑acre parcel associated with Lake Olympia near Plaza Drive and Sutton Way and agreed to seek a conversation with the property owner, identified in the meeting as Mr. Singh, about potential cleanup and preservation uses.

Commissioners described the parcel as historically significant but presently overgrown with berry bushes, illegal encampments and general debris. The site contains two creeks and an earthen dam; commissioners said riparian and regulatory constraints mean large‑scale development is unlikely, but they argued the site could be rehabilitated into an open‑space amenity such as walking trails, benches and a modest water feature.

One commissioner suggested exploring a partnership in which Mr. Singh would undertake initial cleanup (to improve the view for his adjacent development) while the commission and community raise funds to add interpretive signage, benches and limited landscaping. Commissioners noted parking is nearby and that existing adjacent residential areas lack park space, making the parcel potentially valuable to the neighborhood.

Commissioners reported that the commission is in contact with a local author and historian who has been in touch with Mr. Singh and that Mr. Singh is aware he likely cannot develop the parcel in the usual way because of riparian constraints. The commission agreed that next steps include a site visit and an initial outreach to Mr. Singh to explore options for cleanup, donation, or a conservation/partnership arrangement.

No formal action was taken; commissioners assigned follow‑up to meet the owner and walk the site to assess needs and potential funding sources.
