Committee advances bill reclassifying pre-2015 lifetime driving suspensions to lower felony

The Senate Corrections and Criminal Law Committee voted 8-0 to advance House Bill 1554, which would reclassify certain long-standing lifetime driving suspensions as level 6 felonies.
Representative Baskin, the sponsor, said the 2015 criminal-code reform changed how lifetime suspensions are imposed and created pathways to correct older lifetime suspensions if individuals went 10 years without new offenses. He told the committee that people who received lifetime suspensions before February 2015 remain subject to level 5 felony penalties under current law; the bill would lower penalties for those pre-2015 suspensions to level 6 to match the post-2015 structure.
No members of the public signed up to testify. The committee clerk called the roll and the chair recorded an 8-0 vote to advance the bill.
