Committee hears update on Jonesboro Pool leak, naming convention and traffic-calming requests

City staff updated the Finance Committee on maintenance and naming for the Jonesboro City Pool Complex and described the city’s process for resident requests for speed tables and other traffic-calming measures.

Public-works staff reported that the pool continues to operate but that a leak remains; contractors have performed diagnostics, including listening for leaks, and found that one nearby drain was not the source of leakage. The staff member said crews had not yet located the precise source of the leak and that the pool remained open for use. The committee exchanged questions about whether a recent pipe burst during cold weather was the cause; staff said investigations had not confirmed that and the exact source remained undetermined.

Members also discussed how the pool and the adjacent renovated YMCA building should be publicly referenced. A committee member noted confusion and urged a consistent public name; staff said the facility is officially the Jonesboro Pool Complex D/B/A The Y and that exterior signage work is planned to clarify the identity.

On traffic-calming, staff outlined the city’s speed-table request process: staff will perform a traffic study when residents request a speed table; if the study supports it, staff will seek block-level consensus with residents and prioritize requests against limited budgeted funds. Committee members asked about Prospect Road and West Matthews; staff said speed and traffic data have been collected on several east–west routes and that requests are handled through the traffic-control committee and budgeting process.
