Bexar County proclaims March Colon Cancer Awareness Month; commissioners approve outside agency funding request

Bexar County Commissioners Court recognized March as Colon Cancer Awareness Month on March 11 and presented a proclamation urging residents to seek screening and supporting local outreach.

Commissioner Rebecca Clay Flores read the proclamation and called attention to screening benefits and rising diagnoses among younger adults. Representatives from a local nonprofit described their services to patients and survivors and announced a community “Zoomathon” fitness event for March 16 at a neighborhood center.

Commissioner Clay Flores also brought forward a late-filed funding request (agenda item 69a) to allocate outside agency funding from her discretionary funds to sponsor transportation and supportive resources for precinct constituents diagnosed with colon cancer. The agenda description referenced a total amount of 49,999 from the General Fund for outside agencies. During floor discussion Clay Flores said she was allocating discretionary funds to sponsor resources and asked colleagues to match a proposed $50,000 contribution from her precinct to expand county coverage.

Several commissioners verbally agreed to contribute portions of their discretionary funds during the meeting. The court approved the late-filed request by motion; multiple commissioners agreed orally to provide additional discretionary contributions so the group could match the sponsor amount and expand the assistance countywide.
