EU official previews cooperation themes for EU–South Africa summit

In response to questions at a U.N. briefing, the European Union’s High Representative said the forthcoming EU–South Africa summit will focus on energy cooperation, critical raw materials and security arrangements as areas for renewed partnership.
The High Representative of the European Union told reporters at a United Nations Security Council briefing that the upcoming EU–South Africa summit in Cape Town will emphasize cooperation on energy, critical raw materials and security arrangements.
“South Africa's G20 presidency is built on sustainability and equality, which are basic principles also of the European Union,” the High Representative said, noting recent preparatory meetings with ministers in South Africa and opportunities for cooperation.
When asked to frame the summit in the context of recent tensions involving the United States and other actors, the official said there are “a lot of points of cooperation when it comes to energy cooperation, when it comes to critical raw materials, but also, security, arrangements.” The official described the summit as an opportunity to “build this relationship, really anew.”
The remarks were made in response to a question from South African media and were presented as a preview of the summit agenda rather than new binding commitments. The High Representative described the summit as a chance to deepen cooperation on economic and security issues that both sides identify as priorities.
