EU official urges support for United Nations as global security risks rise

“The world is more dangerous now than it has ever been since the cold war,” the High Representative of the European Union said, adding that without the United Nations “the world would face even greater chaos.” The official highlighted the EU’s role as “the United Nations’ most reliable partner and the world’s largest donor of development aid.”
The official said Europe contributes “over a fifth of the UN peacekeeping budget” and conducts “over 20 missions and operations worldwide,” stressing that the EU is both a financial backer and a security provider. The remarks framed the EU as a partner in UN-led stabilization efforts from Gaza and Sudan to Syria and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The official also urged continued faith in multilateral institutions: “Yes. The world is ablaze today, but the multilateral system we built remains the best path to a more stable world.”
The comments came during a briefing that included a question-and-answer session with reporters. Reporters asked about transatlantic tensions and other region-specific matters, but the official repeatedly returned to the need for close EU–U.N. cooperation and for the U.N. Charter to remain the basis for international response to violations of international law.
The briefing highlighted the EU’s dual role: financial contributor and operational security partner. The official said that Team Europe was present at the briefing and described the bloc’s efforts as rooted in efforts to prevent wars among EU members and to uphold the rules-based international order.
The session closed after reporters asked follow-up questions on specific regions, with the official reiterating the EU’s commitment to working with the U.N. on stabilization, humanitarian response and reconstruction planning.
