District proposes production manager role to expand broadcast journalism and run stadium video board

Hudsonville Public School District staff presented a proposed job description to create a production-manager position that would coordinate the district video boards and expand student broadcast journalism opportunities.

Mrs. Armstrong, who led the presentation, said the proposed position grew from conversations among staff and community partners and would be intended to expand the current broadcast journalism program rather than replace existing teachers. She said current staff members perform multiple roles and that a production manager would centralize responsibilities for video-board content, branding and training students to operate production for events.

"This position would be similar in such that, you would have a production manager that would really be the facilitator of all things that go with the video board," Mrs. Armstrong said.

Staff discussed possible future uses of the production role, including live streaming events and producing material for the district’s YouTube presence. The presentation emphasized a desire to involve students across a range of activities and not only the highest-profile sports.

Why it matters: The role would professionalize event production, provide hands-on student learning in media production and shape how the district presents events to the community.
