Pulaski approves application for Safe Streets grant to study downtown traffic, will match up to $20,000

The Pulaski Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted to adopt a resolution authorizing an application for a Safe Streets grant that could provide up to $100,000 for traffic-safety work within city limits. The program requires an 80/20 match; staff said the maximum local match would be $20,000.
Staff member Harrison told the board the grant has been discussed previously and that similar work had been done in nearby municipalities. "I know they've had a lot of good feedback from this," Harrison said about other communities that used the program. The grant would allow the city to study crash locations and congestion points, staff said.
Councilors discussed likely study areas including downtown, West College and East College Streets and corridors near university properties. A staff speaker clarified the grant is crash-based rather than strictly traffic-count based: "It's crash based, not count based," the staff speaker said. Council members said timing would align with the incoming police chief's July swearing-in and that the city would use consultant qualifications to select a firm if awarded.
Councilor Keith moved to adopt the resolution to apply for the grant with a maximum request of $100,000 and an 80/20 match; Bryant seconded. The motion passed by roll call. Staff noted it could be several months before the city learns whether the grant award is approved and that additional procurement and review steps may be required if the grant is awarded.
