Battle Ground board honors Superintendent Denny Waters at final meeting

The Battle Ground School Board on June 9 recognized Superintendent Denny Waters at his final regular board meeting, with trustees, student representatives and a guest offering thanks and well-wishes for his next chapter.
Board President Mary Smitley said Waters helped make the district “stellar” and praised his work on district coherence, telling him: “Your coherence work is amazing.” The board’s vice president, Jackie Maddox, described Waters’s leadership and friendship as “amazing.” Student representatives Julia Stifler and Itzel Contreras Montiel each spoke about Waters’s approachability; Stifler said he was “humble and down to earth” and that his attention to students had a personal impact on her.
Members of the board individually thanked Waters for mentorship and service. Trustee Ted Champine and Trustee Terry Tate offered brief remarks recalling memories and expressing gratitude. Troy (identified in the meeting as the city’s mayor and speaking as a personal friend) also addressed Waters “not in my official capacity, so I just came here as a personal friend,” and congratulated him.
During the recognition the board presented Waters with a plaque. Student representative Julia Stifler also received a commemorative plaque during the same recognition segment.
The board did not take formal personnel action regarding Waters during the recognition segment; the meeting later approved routine consent items (see "Votes at a glance")
