The United Nations Spokesperson announced that Secretary‑General António Guterres will attend the third UN Ocean Conference in Nice, France, and will call for faster ratification of the treaty on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ) and for an ambitious, legally binding plastics treaty this year.
“[The secretary‑general] will recall the progress achieved since the last ocean conference in Lisbon and call for investments to fully realize a sustainable development goal number 14, which is life below water,” the spokesperson said.
The briefing noted that the BBNJ treaty would enter into force 120 days after the sixtieth ratification. To facilitate deposit of ratifications, the UN Department of Legal Affairs will host a treaty event during the conference where member states who have not yet ratified may formally deposit instruments.
The spokesperson said the secretary‑general will also use the trip to hold bilateral meetings with the conference co‑hosts and with the presidents of France and Costa Rica, and will conclude his program in Nice with a press encounter available on UN WebTV.
Ending: The UN framed the Nice conference as an opportunity to accelerate multilateral action on marine biodiversity and plastic pollution, while underlining the need for investment and legally binding agreements to implement SDG 14.
