The New London City Council on May 19 received the resignation of Councilor Alma Esartes and appointed Victoria Sorensen Mueller to fill the vacant council seat.
Councilor Sadi asked the council to “receive for the record the letter from Alma Esartes dated 05/12/2025, in which she resigned” and the council voted to accept the resignation for the record. Council members then moved to fill the vacancy under City Charter Section 19; after an amendment to insert Victoria Sorensen Mueller’s name, the council approved the appointment and administered the oath of office to Mueller at the meeting.
The appointment drew procedural questions from some members about how the replacement was selected. Councilor Dice moved the main motion to appoint; Councilor Sadi seconded the motion to receive the resignation and later seconded the appointment. President Dominguez called the votes by voice and declared the motions carried. Mueller took the oath publicly and then took her seat on the council.
The council did not adopt any additional procedural changes at the meeting; members who raised concerns about transparency said they would push for clearer processes in future replacements.
Mueller’s appointment fills the seat left open following Esartes’s resignation; the council will carry on with its remaining agenda items and committee work with the newly seated member.
