Commissioners used the Jan. 22 meeting to solicit ideas for 2025 projects and to discuss a state competitive grant opportunity for parks and recreation that staff said allows projects to ask for up to $6,000,000.
Adam Castaneda told commissioners the state released competitive park grant funding the same day, and that the city could pursue applications for new or renovated facilities. "Up to $6,000,000 would be the ask," Castaneda said. He asked commissioners to begin compiling project ideas so staff could prepare a proposed list, workshops and an application timeline. Staff identified Aug. 5 as the application deadline given during the meeting.
Commissioners discussed several potential projects: a comprehensive renovation of Memorial Park (including an accessible hard-surfaced viewing area in front of the band shell for people with wheelchairs or walkers), updating downtown parks, splash pads and restroom amenities, and smaller recreation improvements such as pickleball courts. One commissioner asked about a previously discussed sports complex site off Madsen; staff said that project had been estimated at roughly $42,000,000, the land is not owned by the city, and council previously moved away from pursuing that scope because of funding constraints.
Staff proposed a timeline: commissioners to finalize a project list in February, present it in April to give staff time for community workshops and application preparation, and submit an application before the Aug. 5 deadline.
