City staff told the Community Service Commission that the new dog park is essentially complete and that the commission tentatively set a ribbon-cutting for March 15 with a 10 a.m. arrival and a 10:30 a.m. ceremony.
Adam Castaneda, Community Services director, said most amenities are in place, restrooms have been installed and crews are completing final electrical work; a few shade structures are still outstanding and the site has been hydroseeded and will remain closed until the landscape takes root. "It was a project a federally funded project," Castaneda said when discussing the dog park funding source.
Commissioners agreed a weekend opening would be most inclusive and discussed a 10 a.m. start, a brief ceremony at 10:30 and concluding by about 11 to 11:30 a.m. Staff said Save Mart has offered to partner and bring pet-related vendors and that local businesses, groomers and veterinarians could be invited. The commission discussed using the opening to distribute safety information and park rules; staff said commissioners will prepare pamphlets or a rules list for the public.
A subcommittee will meet to organize outreach and vendor invitations before the March event. Staff noted the park is not yet open to the public while hydroseeding establishes, and recommended scheduling the grand opening after the turf has rooted so the site is presentable.
