Kingsburg confirms inclusive playground in Westar Phase 5; Memorial Park renovation to be separate project

Kingsburg staff told the Community Service Commission that Westar Construction has given the green light to include an inclusive play structure in its Phase 5 development, and commissioners will reconvene a subcommittee, including members of the public, to choose equipment and features.
Adam Castaneda, Community Services director, said the planting and implementation portion of the playground project "has been given the green light to go ahead and go forward." He asked commissioners to review the manufacturer catalog (the 02/2025 catalog was referenced) and to resume the subcommittee that will compile a wish list of equipment and amenities.
Staff said budget numbers are not yet available because costs will depend on Westar's contribution and any city allocation. Castaneda said the inclusive playground is intended to be more comprehensive than ADA compliance alone, designed to accommodate people with physical and cognitive disabilities so more residents can use the play area together.
Commissioners confirmed the project at the Westar site is the near-term focus; improvements to Memorial Park will be handled as a distinct, separate project. The commission plans to reconvene the public-including subcommittee to narrow the wish list and assess feasibility for the allotted park space.
