Missoula trustees approve April spring break after debate over survey and activities

The Missoula County Public Schools Board of Trustees voted to place next school year's spring break in April after discussing a district survey and impacts on extracurriculars and staff schedules.
Trevor, a district staff member who presented results of a community survey, told trustees the district received 3,729 responses: 2,316 parents, 798 students and 615 staff. He said "March won out with 2,163 votes, and April had 1,566," but that the student response favored March by 77% while staff slightly favored April (54% to 46%). Despite the survey outcome, the board moved the break to April after members raised other considerations.
Board members and staff said the choice affects athletics, club schedules and family logistics. Trustee Meg, who moved the motion to set the break in April, said many parents told her they preferred a warmer April break and noted staffing stress after long stretches in the classroom. Trustee Jenny and others raised concerns that club sports and some spring tournaments, particularly club soccer, might be affected because those seasons sometimes run in April; the board clarified that high school varsity soccer runs in the fall and club schedules are separate from district calendars. District staff also noted that spring activities such as track and baseball, and hosted stadium events, could shift practices or games depending on timing.
The board treated the high-school and elementary calendars as separate votes. The motion to set the high-school spring break in April was moved by Trustee Meg and seconded by Trustee Lisa; the board recorded two "no" votes (Trustee Mercer and Trustee Arlene) and the motion passed. Elementary trustees then voted separately on the elementary calendar; that motion (seconded by Trustee Witcher) passed unanimously among elementary trustees present.
Trustees and staff said the district will monitor the effects of the change and can revisit the calendar in future years as needed. Trevor noted the calendar committee, which includes association representatives and administrators, will continue to refine schedules and that the board has the option to reconsider next year.
