At a regular meeting of the Ontario School District 8C Board of Directors, district staff reported winter benchmark results showing improvement across all K–6 grades in math and declines in the share of elementary students flagged "at risk" in early reading. Board members also approved a series of routine motions, including field trips, financial audits and a budget schedule.
The midyear academic update was presented by Steve Wybony, the district math coach, and Christy Swan, the district early literacy coordinator. "Every single grade level K–6 scored higher this year than last year," Wybony told the board when summarizing the winter Common Formative Assessment results. He reported percentage-point gains for kindergarten through sixth grade (kindergarten +8; first +1; second +1; third +2; fourth +4; fifth +2; sixth +5).
Swan presented winter literacy benchmark data and emphasized reductions in the percentage of students classified as "at risk" by nationally normed measures. "We want the number to go down," she said, noting specific shifts: kindergarten at‑risk students fell from about 38% last winter to about 26% this winter; first grade declined from about 62% to about 38%.
