Board members said portions of the proposed handbook include activities the board has not recently practiced, such as retreats and self-evaluations. "If we're not doing stuff, it shouldn't be in there," one board member said, urging removal of items the board does not intend to implement.
Staff confirmed there were multiple versions with differing page content and offered to provide page numbers showing where the draft and the existing handbook diverge. A board member volunteered to assemble suggested edits and asked staff to produce a clean, final version for review. Staff said it would try to circulate a consolidated draft by the end of the following week to give board members time to provide feedback.
Members discussed what a retreat might include, budget and format constraints, and outside opportunities. Staff noted MABE offers facilitation and retreat services; another option cited was an external regional retreat (identified in the meeting as an ESMEC full-day event in Ocean City) that board members were encouraged to consider for professional development and team building.
Because the handbook is an action item, board members suggested placing a final, clean copy on the Feb. 5 agenda for a vote after members have had time to review edits. Staff agreed to provide tracked-change locations and a consolidated draft for review.
