Huron commission approves consent agenda; personnel moves, raffle, tax abatement and holiday closures noted

The Huron City Commission on Feb. 3 approved the consent agenda, which included minutes from the Feb. 3 meeting, fuel quotes for city departments, a raffle filing, a property tax abatement application, multiple personnel actions and payment of bills.

Items approved on the consent agenda included: - Minutes from the Feb. 3, 2025 commission meeting (item 4.1). - Fuel quotes for city departments (item 4.2). - A raffle filed by Holy Trinity Catholic School at 425 First Street Southwest for Catholic United Financial; prizes were described as “Huron Bucks” (item 4.3). - Consideration of an application for abatement or refund of property taxes for property located at 1581 Simmons Avenue Southeast, purchased by Bethesda Church (meeting text: purchase date listed as March 20 24) (item 4.4). - Personnel items (item 4.5), including: hire Catherine Amar as deputy accounting clerk in the finance office effective Feb. 18, 2025, with a 1,040-hour probationary period; accept transfer of Carrie Jones from solid waste scale operator to accounting technician in utility billing and finance effective Feb. 18, 2025, with a 60-calendar-day probationary period; post internally and advertise if needed for a solid waste scale operator position and a solid waste maintenance I position; accept the promotion of Co Long from police officer to police sergeant effective Feb. 9, 2025, with a 45-calendar-day probationary period; and hire Cody Maxwell as a full-time police officer effective Feb. 9, 2025, with a 45-calendar-day probationary period. - Payment of the bills (item 4.6).

Commissioner Weinreich used the meeting to announce his intention to run for a second term on the commission; he said the election will be April 8. “I just would like to announce tonight that I…announce my intention to run for the city commission for a second term,” Weinreich said.

The commission approved the consent agenda by roll call. The vote recorded Commissioner Smith (aye), Commissioner Weinreich (aye), Commissioner Harvey (aye) and Mayor Roberts (aye). Two commissioners were absent for parts of the meeting (Grady and Bragg were noted as absent).

Staff also announced operational details for Presidents' Day: the solid waste department and the bridal site will be closed Monday, Feb. 17; Monday's garbage and recycling will be collected on Wednesday, Feb. 19, and residents were asked to have containers out Tuesday evening; city offices will be closed Monday, Feb. 17 and there will be no commission meeting that evening.
