District 49 performance office previews Baldrige application and new district performance tools

Matt Barrett, director of data and performance excellence, briefed the El Paso County Colorado School District 49 Board of Education on Feb. 13 about the Performance Excellence team’s work, new analytics tools and the district’s plan to pursue Baldrige recognition.
Barrett described the district performance framework (DPF) calculator — a spreadsheet tool that mirrors how the Colorado Department of Education evaluates districts — and the public district performance dashboard that displays key performance indicators. He said the tools let principals and zone superintendents set specific, measurable targets and see where modest gains can yield significant changes in district-level metrics.
“The DPF calculator gives principals and zone leaders the ability to project results and create SMART goals tied to actual state assessment data,” Barrett said during his presentation. He told the board the tools helped the district make measurable gains and provide evidence for the district’s Baldrige Performance Excellence application, due May 22.
Barrett also outlined three Performance Excellence goals for the coming year: complete a Baldrige application, document and standardize key processes across the district and increase usage of tools and dashboards by leaders and staff. He said a vacant position on the Performance Excellence team was nearly filled and that department staff will present live demonstrations of the dashboard at the district’s upcoming annual planning summit.
Board members responded positively, noting the tools’ value for goal setting and school‑level planning. Several directors said they would review the live dashboards at the upcoming summit and requested a deeper one‑on‑one briefing with the superintendent and staff before Saturday’s event.
