Oconee commissioners decline to opt out of House Bill 581 after public comment

During the town hall, resident Bill Cray urged the Oconee County Board of Commissioners to pursue an opt-out from House Bill 581, citing concerns about local control and potential impacts on his property tax bill.

Cray, who identified himself as a Watkinsville resident, said he was on a fixed income and that voters "overwhelmingly voted for" the exemption tied to the bill. He asked county officials for information about how opting out would affect a homeowner with a $300,000 house.

A county representative responded that the board had reviewed the bill during a strategic planning meeting and that "there's no consensus to move forward any opt out. So we will not be opting out of House Bill 581." The representative did not record a formal vote during the town hall, and no motion, second, or roll-call vote was announced at the meeting.

Commission staff did not provide specific tax-impact figures at the meeting. Cray said he had requested a printed example of the tax effect for a $300,000 home and that the tax commissioner's office had not provided that material during his inquiry.

The county representative thanked residents for their comments and confirmed that no further action on an opt-out would be taken at this time.
