House committee advances bill to expand Medicaid inspector general authority after hours of debate

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Kansas House on March 11 advanced a proposal to expand the Office of the Medicaid Inspector Generalto audit and investigate non‑Medicaid public assistance programs, after several hours of floor debate and multiple failed amendments.

The bill, House Bill 22‑17, would broaden the inspector generalto include oversight of cash assistance (TANF), food assistance (SNAP) and other health‑related assistance programs; proponents said the change would let the office pursue additional fraud, waste and abuse and recover misspent funds.

Why it matters: Supporters said the officehas a track record of identifying errors and recovery opportunities in Medicaid and that expanding its scope could protect taxpayer dollars and improve program integrity. Opponents said the bill duplicates work already required of the Department for Children and Families and the federal government, risks mission creep within the Attorney General's office, and would add staff and expense in a year the Legislature is prioritizing fiscal restraint.
