County approves Rural Fire District 6 grant application for station generator

The Saline County Board of Commissioners on March 11 authorized Rural Fire District 6 to apply for and accept a Kansas Hazard Mitigation Grant to install a backup generator at a district fire station.
Michelle Weiss, Saline County Emergency Management director, said the generator project has been identified in the county's hazard mitigation plan across two prior revisions and remains a continuing need. "This grant is a 25% match," Weiss told commissioners, and staff presented project figures during the meeting.
Weiss said the total project cost is $25,323.86, with state and federal funds covering $19,742.90 for generator purchase and electrical work; Rural Fire District 6 would be responsible for a 25% match of $6,580.96. Weiss said the district plans to purchase a generator to cover the match and will finance that from its special equipment funds.
Commissioners asked whether other districts have installed generators; Weiss said some districts used American Rescue Plan Act funds for generators and some have expressed interest in remaining operational during outages or in serving as emergency shelters during incidents. No commissioner moved to add additional conditions; a motion to approve the request for action (RFA 2025-38) carried by voice vote.
The board's action allows the district to proceed with formal application and, if awarded, accept the grant subject to the stated match. The meeting record does not include a grant award timeline or installation schedule.
