Saline County awards $132,300 bid for road paint and reflective beads

Saline County commissioners on March 11 approved a $132,300 purchase of waterborne traffic-line paint and reflective glass beads to maintain pavement markings across the county.
The vote came after a presentation by Darren Fischel, Saline County Road and Bridge administrator, who told commissioners sealed bids were opened Feb. 18 and five bids were received for both paint and glass beads. "Saline County has 175 miles of asphalt surface road," Fischel said, and the recommended quantities include 2,750 gallons of yellow paint to repaint centerlines and 6,250 gallons of white paint, which he said will cover approximately 75% of the county's roads.
Fischel recommended accepting Diamond Bogle's low bid for paint at $11.34 per gallon and accepting Jonas Enterprises Inc.'s low bid for glass beads at $0.42 per pound. He said the combined materials total $132,300 and recommended using funds from budget account O11030912273 (paint and beads), which had a balance of $145,000 at the time of the presentation.
Commission discussion focused on routine maintenance and safety. Fischel said the county repaints yellow lines annually and roughly 75% of white lines each year, and that newer chip-seal materials have reduced the need for some double-painting but that the current order "does have enough to do that." A motion to approve the request for action (RFA 2025-35) passed by voice vote; the clerk recorded the motion as carried.
The purchase will fund routine repainting used to maintain nighttime and winter driving visibility on narrow roads, according to the Road and Bridge administrator. The board did not attach additional conditions to the award and did not detail delivery or installation timelines during the meeting.
