Senate committee hears bill to require drivers to stop for on-track equipment at rail crossings

Senator Jason Bean of Holcomb presented Senate Bill 254 Monday to the Missouri Senate Transportation, Infrastructure and Public Safety Committee, saying the measure would require drivers to stop at railroad crossings for any on‑track equipment in addition to trains.
Bean told the committee the change would expand the existing statute to cover work or maintenance equipment operating on rails and said that adding on‑track equipment to the law would “further protect drivers as well as railroad workers.” Committee action on the proposal has not yet been taken.
The hearing took place as lawmakers near the midpoint of the session; reporter Dean Morgan noted this week marks the halfway point of the regular session and that the legislature will observe its annual mid‑session recess next week, with no session scheduled.
