A planning commission representative told the council the commission continues work on the comprehensive plan update and is assembling vision, goals and objectives. Specific projects discussed included the Memorial Park expansion (pending approvals from the State Highway Administration for Frederick Street access and final landscaping/forestation approvals), continued expansion work by Babco including a new parking lot where houses were removed last year, site grading at the Recovery 180 parcel on York Street and a pre-K and kindergarten addition at Tottenham Town Elementary School that is currently out to bid.
The Department of Public Works reported that Monumental Paving completed pipe work and manhole rehabilitation in February and that weather has allowed paving work to begin and yard restoration to be completed. A pre-construction meeting for Westview Drive was held and contractors will start work as weather permits; the scope includes roadway cutting and installation of new valves to isolate the construction area. City Hall roof and interior repairs from prior water damage were completed by DPW staff.
Parks and Recreation reported planting of four red maple trees donated by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Forest Service Division, coordination of tennis clinics and summer yoga in the park, planning for 21 events including recreational programs and special events, and an Easter egg hunt scheduled for Saturday, April 12 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Memorial Park. Parks staff said they are still working to secure funding for movie licenses for the summer movie series and expect to finalize licenses in the coming weeks.
Habitat for Humanity has an application period open for a rehabbing project at 164 South Court Street; applications are being accepted through April (application deadline stated by staff). Departments and commission members encouraged public engagement in planning commission meetings and upcoming events.
