Bethlehem Area Vocational‑Technical School (BAVTS) officials presented their proposed general operating budget and program highlights to the Bethlehem Area School District Board on March 10.
A BAVTS presenter summarized student and program highlights, saying the school operates 27 unique programs across 33 classrooms with typical enrollment above 1,300 students. The presenter said BAVTS has notable achievements including a school food truck, conversion of an internal combustion vehicle to electric, national recognitions for school culture and a high number of National Technical Honor Society inductees and SkillsUSA competitors.
On finances, the presenter said the proposed budget totals $15,555,038 — a $957,139 (6.56%) increase from the prior year. The presenter explained that about 74% of the budget is personnel costs and that two new positions are proposed to support the factory campus expansion. The presenter said total additional district contributions required would be approximately $446,133, which translates to a 3.96% increase apportioned across sponsor districts under the established funding formula (three‑year rolling averages of enrollment and market value for capital).
Why it matters: the vocational school’s budget, program expansions and student outcomes affect district contributions and student opportunities in career and technical education. The presenter asked the board to note the budget’s impact on each sponsoring district; under the formula Bethlehem’s share was shown rising by about 2.55% while other sponsors showed different changes tied to enrollment and market value shifts.
Program context and next steps: presenters emphasized continued growth in enrollment after COVID declines and said BAVTS intends to continue expanding offerings and campus capacity. The presenter said the board will see the final numbers on the March 17 agenda and that the factory campus operating costs were being phased into the budget as the campus comes online.
