Sheriff's office reports jail expansion progress, programming gains and a large reimbursement check

The sheriff reported that the county's new detention complex has progressed to poured cell walls: the project will create 104 beds (26 units, two cells per unit), and staff said they had inspected the site recently. The office also described equipment and program investments: a virtual welding trainer was delivered for training classes (partly donated), and a skid-steer and a body scanner — the latter funded through an external grant routed via another county — are already in use or in place for the current facility and planned for transfer to the new complex.
Operationally, the sheriff said the office is housing more federal inmates than in the past to preserve regional relationships and potential future bed fill arrangements. The office reported strong participation in in-custody programs: six inmates completed GEDs in the prior three months, two "Inside Out Dad" graduations produced 37 graduates, and nine inmates completed a life-skills program. Staff noted increased demand for programming and training and highlighted the Ignite program launched last year.
Financially, the sheriff's office presented a large jail-reimbursement check from the state, which staff said reflects an annual legislative reimbursement program for county jail work-days and sentenced-incarceration credits. The office also requested a $2,700 budget adjustment to retain access to professionally maintained jail standards guidance the sheriff's association had stopped funding; the standards are used for policy and training review.
Commissioners asked procedural questions about staffing and the new facility; no formal action was required at the meeting beyond the routine budget adjustment request to be handled through the sheriff's budget process.
