Orono board schedules public hearing on property-tax abatement to fund campus parking-lot repairs; adopts personnel policies

At a regular meeting of the Orono Public School District Board of Education, trustees voted to call a public hearing next month on a proposed property-tax abatement that would enable the district to issue abatement bonds intended to fund multi-year repairs to campus parking lots and paved walkways.

The board chair called for a public hearing resolution after Director of Business Services Nick Tainter described the district’s facilities needs and the financing approach. “Abatement bonds are a primary means of funding those improvements, such as reclaim and repavement of parking lots,” Tainter said. He described the work as a three-year project to repair high-need areas, with the abatement bonds secured by parcels of property as allowed under state statute and intended to “support those debt service payments.”

The district’s preliminary financial estimates presented to the board put the total estimated cost roughly at $3.8 million over seven years, with an identified project cost of about $3.1 million to fund the parking-lot and pathway work.
